Anedra Darlene Newman

February 19, 1957 — June 17, 2024

Anedra, affectionally called Nennie, passed away peacefully surrounded by family. She was the youngest of eight children. Born in Nashville, Tennessee she was proceeded in death by her parents Andrew and Pearl Batey, brothers Jesse and Arthur Batey, sisters Mary Batey Hughes and Mabel Batey Jordan. 

Nennie gave her life to Christ at an early age. She attended Temple Church and regularly attended Sunday school. 

Nennie graduated from Maplewood High School in 1975, Middle Tennessee State University [December 1979] with a Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood and Elementary Education, Trevecca Nazarene University [June 1987] with a Master’s degree in Education Administration and Supervision. She did her student teaching abroad in Cartagena, Colombia in Fall 1979. She later returned in 1980 and taught in Colombia for a year. Nennie was an educator in Rutherford County City Schools until retiring in 2013. 

She became a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc with Pi Nu Omega in Rutherford County. 

During her spare time, she enjoyed reading, gardening especially planting flowers to display each season, and spending time with family and friends watching movies and dining out. 

Nennie leaves to cherish Patrick Newman; former spouse, Murfreesboro, Keenon Newman; son, Murfreesboro, TN, Kevon Bowen; son, Smyrna, TN, sisters Jean Batey Crismon, Iris Batey Teats of Nashville, TN, Sherrial Batey Yarbrough, Baton Rouge, LA, and a host of nephews, great nephews, nieces, great nieces, cousins, and close special friends Amanda Pillow and Chris Wright. She also leaves behind many students she’s taught throughout the years.
