Evelyn Joyce-Murray Neely
September 10, 1936 — June 2, 2016
Age 79, was the youngest child born to Isaac and Elizabeth Porter Murray on September 10, 1936 in Houston, Texas.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Melba Stewart; brothers, Tony and Isaac Murray and son in law, Arthur Lee Dunn.
Evelyn was educated in the Houston Public School system matriculating from Phyllis Wheatley High School in 1953. She received her B.A. Degree in 1957 from Fisk University, Nashville, TN. Evelyn was truly a life-time educator, amassing more than 35 years improving the lives of hundreds of students in the Metro Nashville Schools.
Upon retirement in 1994, Evelyn remained actively involved in the Birthday Club and Fisk University Alumni Association. Her home parish, St. Patrick’s Catholic Church could always depend on her as she served as a Eucharistic Minister and Parish musician when needed.
Evelyn married Mansfield D. Neely. Jr., (the love of her life) in March 1957. They were committed to their marriage (‘til death do us part), respected each other, and entrusted their lives to God and family. To this union, two children: Toni and Tanise were born.
To cherish her memories, Evelyn takes a walk from her devoted husband, Mansfield D. Neely, Jr.; her daughters,Toni Neely Dunn of Houston, Texas, and Tanise Neely Jackson (Michael) of Tallahassee, Florida; her grandsons, Arthur Neely Dunn, Benjamin Jackson, and Alexander Jackson; her loving sister, Tommye Murray Briggs; nephew, Wm. Douglas Wright; brother in law, Deacon Robert Neely (Grace ) of Columbus, Ohio; a devoted caregiver, Evelyn McAbee; and a host of relatives and friends.
