Flavel Marie Hughes Stovall

September 20, 1924 — January 13, 2018

Home going celebration for Flavel Marie Hughes Stovall. She was the first born to Thomas Hughes Sr., and Ethel Goodman on September 20, 1924. She was followed by brother, Thomas Hughes, Jr. and sister, Kathryn Phillips; who preceded her in death.

Flavel Marie attended Nashville Public Schools and graduated from Pearl High School in 1942. Her hobbies included: collecting indian artifacts, pictures, and traveling. She also enjoyed visiting Buffalo, NY and Niagara Falls. She met and married, Ernest Lee Cheatham, Sr., and to this union seven children were born. They are: Shirley(Edgar) Davis, Ernest(Mattie) Cheatham, Beverly Cheatham Burnett, David(Jenice) Cheatham, Harold(Deborah) Cheatham, Brenda Cheatham Russell and Jacqueline(Andrew) Berry.

Flavel Marie was a hard consistent worker for many years at Vanderbilt University in the Housekeeping Department. Later worked for a retired school teacher, then store manager at Stockards Market. Her last employment was with McDonald Enterprise for several years as a prep worker, until her health began to deteriorate.

She was a Charter member of The Temple Church, and was actively involved in the Matrons Auxiliary, Willing Workers, and Senior Ushers.

She enjoyed Jazz music, watching soap operas, spending time with grandkids. She was affectionately called “Granny and Gran-gran.” She was an excellent cook.

Flavel Marie was diagnosed with Alzheimers in 2000 and continued to stay at her home until 2005 as her condition declined. On March 16, 2007, she was transported to Bordeaux Nursing Facility to get the care and assistance she needed. She later moved to Signature Healthcare, where she resided until her demise.

Flavel Marie leaves to cherish her memory, her devoted children, Shirley(Edgar) Davis, Ernest(Mattie) Cheatham, Beverly Cheatham Burnett, David(Jenice) Cheatham, Harold(Deborah) Cheatham, Brenda Cheatham Russell and Jacqueline(Andrew) Berry; twenty grandchildren, Dr, Terrell Cheatham Carpenter of Memphis, Tn., LaDonya Johnson, Reginald Cheatham, Marquis Cheatham, Jsakal & Jhamal Davis of Memphis, Tn., Latalia Cheatham, Zarren Cheatham, Angie & Tarsha Johnson, Quintin & Tiko Cheatham, Dia Mimms, Tamika Knox, Quannica Cheatham Amos, Christopher Russell, Miarsche & Jhauna Russell, Harold & Frederick Johnson, Leyser Burnett; thirty three great grandchildren; other extended family members, nieces, nephews and friends.


Visitation Friday, January 19, 2018 from 11:00 a.m. ~ 12:00 noon with funeral to follow at the Temple Church, 3810 Kings Lane with Senior Pastor Darrell A. Drumwright, Officiant.

Interment Greenwood West Cemetery.
