John accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age. He was baptized at Greater St. John Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Dr. Frank M. Spence. Later, he united with Born Again Church, where he was a faithful member and played the trumpet in the Wind Ensemble.

John graduated from Maplewood High School in 1989. He was an active member of the High School Band. The instrument that he loved to play was the trumpet. He studied and learned how to play the trumpet while in elementary school.

John attended Nashville State Community College where he studied Business Administration. He was employed by St. Thomas and Southern Hills Hospital as a Surgical Technician. In these roles, he was responsible for preparing the operating room instruments. He loved both jobs. He took pride in making sure everything was ready for surgery.

John was a quiet, mild mannered, easy going spirit who always had a smile on his face. He had a special loving bond with his mother Joyce Newsom and loved family gatherings.
