Leon Turner was born August 8, 1932 in Nashville, TN and began his heavenly journey February 3, 2022. He was preceded in death by his parents Audrey and Clarence Turner; Yvonne Turner, wife, siblings; John Turner, Emma Gregory, and Roy Turner, and sons William “Thee” and Alvin Wilson.
At an early age he professed a commitment to Christ and was a dedicated member of St. Matthew African Methodist Episcopal Church where he served in the men’s choir and as treasurer until his death.
Leon was educated in Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools and attended Pearl High School. He served in the United States Army and received an honorable discharge. After serving his country he returned to Nashville where he met and married the love of his life Yvonne Wilson Turner. Their union lasted 54 years prior to her transition from this earth in 2010.
Leon was employed with Nashville Metropolitan government for 38 years, serving 31 years as a fireman for the Nashville Fire Department. He retired in 1997 as captain. He loved everything about being a fireman, especially the friendships he developed over decades within the department.
Leon was an avid sports fan with a particular affinity for the Tennessee Titans. In his earlier years he was a bowler enthusiast, with membership in several area bowling leagues. In many instances, to know him was to love him. Leon was a straight-shooter and had no problem expressing his feelings, opinions, and truths. Most of all, he was a fun-loving man.
Leon leaves to cherish his memory sons Desi Turner and Wendell (Carmen) Turner; sister Annie Avant; grandchildren Vesia (Linwood) Hawkins, Jarvis Turner, Wendell (Brittany) Turner, Darius Turner; 5 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild; several nieces, nephews, cousins, a caretaker and devoted friend Ruth Epperson, as well as a host of other relatives and friends
