Lillie Mae Oatis was born on September 5, 1930 in Hattiesburg, MS, to Doshia Bourne and Ed James who preceded her in death. She was one of seventeen children. Upon the death of her mother, she was raised by her loving aunt and uncle Leandra and Henry Rhodes. She united in holy matrimony to Moses Oatis. On Monday, November, 7, 2016 Lillie left her earthly shell and made a sweet transition in the arms of her Heavenly Father.
She received her education in the public schools of Hattiesburg, MS. Lillie was a very wise woman who loved to read, had a passion for education, encouraging others to further their education to their full potential and pursue their aspirations.
Lillie Mae professed Christ as her Savior at an early age. Upon moving to Nashville, she joined Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church and served as a Sunday school teacher, an Usher and other duties with dignity and order when called on. She loved her church family and was a faithful and dedicated servant until her illness. She never met a stranger. She always showed love and kindness, and would tell everyone about her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and His goodness.
She loved gardening and planting vegetables. She would say, “When my hands and feet are in the dirt, my soul is happy.” She loved sharing her harvest with others. She loved playing spades and pokeno, as well as having bridge luncheons with her closest friends. She loved traveling, and watching sports; especially football and baseball.
She was a dedicated employee at Meharry-Hubbard Hospital for over 33 years. After her retirement, she worked at the Samaritan Ministries until her illness.
Lillie Mae was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Moses Oatis, son, Eric Oatis, daughter, Gloria Russell.
She leaves to cherish her memories devoted and loving children, Ronald (Veronica) Oatis, Leandra (Ronnie) Cathey Sr., and Brenda (Ronnie) Terrell. Eight grandchildren, Anquilla Russell, Richard (Nicole) Russell, Roderick Oatis, Eric Davis, Ronald Oatis Jr, Phillip (Jasmine) Womack, Venita Williams and Ashton Oatis. Devoted sisters, Leandera Brumfield, Eldora Ayers, Dixie (David) Baker, Nettie Parker, Thelma Price, Lizzie Bournes and sister in law, Mary Jo Rhodes, a host of great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
