Mother Rhuel Agnes Enable Johnson

Mother Rhuel Enable was born in St. Mary’s Perish, Patterson, Louisiana September 30, 1915, born to Amelia and Albert Enable. Her father Albert Enable remained in Louisiana and served in the military in 1917 - 1918. Rhuel with her mother, grandmother, aunts, uncle and cousins relocated to Ouachita, Louisiana in 1920, and in the mid 1920s moved to Gulf Port, Mississippi, and in later 1920s Rhuel with the family moved to Nashville, Tennessee. The Family purchased a home upon moving to Nashville, TN at 614 Ewing Avenue.
After the move to Nashville, Tennessee, Rhuel Enable was educated in Nashville Public School Ewing Avenue. System, graduating from Pearl High School. After graduation she became a private in home domestic worker for many years. She was proud of the work that she had done in the home of the then Governor Lamar Alexander.
In 1938 Rhuel Enable was married to Elder Lorenzo Nathan Johnson by Bishop A.B. McEwing, Sr. her husband passed away in 1973. To this union was born (6) children. Elder L.N. Johnson became pastor of the East Nashville, Church of God In Christ, at 322 North 8th Street, where his wife served faithfully beside him. Mother Rhuel Johnson could be counted on to lift the Saints in worship services with her anointed singing, and reading the scriptures in her strong voice as her husband often was a “read on” preacher. Mother Rhuel Johnson was an active part of the Sewing Cicle, prayer and bible band, sunday school, Y.P.W.W., revival services, prayer services and shut ins, Sick members vistations. Many times when the church was in revival, the evangelist stayed in the Johnson’s home.
Mother Rhuel Johnson received Jesus as her personal savior at a young age, and was baptized in the Holy Ghost. She was known as “a song bird of the south” and was called upon to sing in the National Holy Convocation in Memphis, in Church of God In Christ State Convocations and District Meetings. Mother Johnson recorded a 78’ vinyl record: side 1 - “It’s A Blessing Just to Call My Saviour’s Name, side 2 - “Go Ahead.” Some of the pastors said, “Sister Johnson could sing til the hair rose on your head.”
In 1960 as District Supertendant of the Nashville District, Bishop J.O. Patterson, Sr. appointed Elder Johnson to pastor the Algood and Livington, Tennessee Churches of God In Christ. Mother Rhuel Johnson and their daughters traveled with her husband while he pastored those churches.
Following Elder L.N. Johnson’s illness and pasing, Mother Johnson became a memeber of The Pentecostal Tabernacle Church, pastored by Dr. Jonathan Greer, II. She had been a faithful supporter of Pentecostal Tabernacle Church since its founding in 1966, where her three daughters were are part of the the founding membership.
Mother Johnson remained until her passing a faithful member of Cathedral of Praise Church under leadership of our pastor Bishop Jerry L. Maynard, Sr., and Dr. Mary T. Maynard both who she loved dearly.
Mother Rhuel Enable Johnson leaves to Celebrate and Cherish her life of 101 years: Three daughters, Mary Boyd, Brenda Covington, Jacqueline (Wm.Howard) Nichols; son, Christopher (Joyce)Johnson, two sons preceded her in death, David E. “Sonny” Johnson, Jonathan Johnson: daughter in law, Martha Hayes; a cousin, Gerald Joe Brown; nieces Elizabeth Harding, Mattie Cannon, Lucille Dolenson, Minister Flora D. Blackman; devoted grand children, Pamela Dozier, LaTonya Norton, Michael E. (Eucrita) Johnson, Sr., Timothy (Monique) Nichols, Erica (Eric) Henderson, Nichole Nevels, Ricky Hayes: several great-grand children; several great-great grand children; and many other relatives and dear family friends.
As Mother Johnson always said, “TO GOD BE THE GLORY, FOR THE THINGS THAT HE HAS DONE.”
