His early primary education was completed at the Scarborough R.C. Primary School, where he had his First Holy Communion at the of age seven.

Having passed the Common Entrance Examination at age eleven, Richard began his Secondary education at the prestigious College of the Immaculate Conception, better known as St, Mary's College, or CIC. He proceeded to another boys’ College, Trinity College, Maraval, to complete his GCE Advanced Level Examinations. Richard continued his musical education at Mrs. Esther Batson’s Music School. He graduated from Howard University with a BS in Biology and completed his tertiary and higher education in Nashville Tennessee, earning a master’s degree, a Ph.D. in Biology, and a degree in Theology.

While attending Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Richard was shown a picture of Suzan Flagg by a friend.
